Smalti has been an important part of the mosaic tradition since Roman and Byzantine times. The Perdomo Family introduced smalti to the Americas in 1949 using its own recipes and techniques for colour processing so that one side has unique variations in colour and texture.  Smalti is produced by melting glass at high temperatures, and adding oxides to produce the colour. Once it has cooled (annealed) it is hand cut into smaller pieces (tesserae).  The rich colours reflect light and provide a lustrous and durable, non-fading finish.  The variations unique to Mexican smalti provide the artist with more artistic options. In addition, it has a more consistent thickness making it more suitable for floors and tables.   There is also a range of iridescent colours and golds to provide extra sparkle and richness, as well as a colourful selection of flat glass pebbles.
